You need to pick a sacred text from a world religion and dig into what it actually means. You'll use at least two different reading methods (like looking at it literally, historically, or through a particular perspective) to unpack the text's meaning, then explain your interpretation with solid evidence from the text and trusted religious sources. It's about understanding how a religious community understands and uses this text.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Select a sacred text of sufficient significance and length from a world religion or indigenous tradition (e.g., the Bible, Qur'an, Vedas, Book of Job, Diamond Sutra)
- ·Apply two distinct methods of interpretation (such as literal, historical-critical, narrative, feminist, epistemological, or ethnographic) to extract meanings from the text
- ·Explain which interpretative methods you used and why they matter for understanding the text
- ·Support your analysis with evidence directly from the sacred text and from recognised authoritative sources within that religious tradition
- ·Draw clear conclusions about what the text means and how those meanings matter within the religious community that holds it sacred
