This standard is about understanding spoken Spanish in everyday situations—like conversations in a pharmacy, discussions about traditional dances, or students talking about exam prep. You listen to Spanish conversations and answer questions in English or te reo Māori to show you've understood what the speakers said, what they meant, and why they said it.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Listen to everyday Spanish conversations and identify the key information, ideas, and opinions the speakers are sharing
- ·Explain what the speakers meant and show you understand the overall message, even if some parts are tricky
- ·Use specific details from the listening texts to support your answers—don't just guess or rely on what you already know
- ·Make clear connections between different pieces of information (like explaining how two speakers' experiences are similar or different)
- ·Answer in English or te reo Māori, not in Spanish
You identify the main points and understand the general gist of what the speakers are saying, even if your response is brief and doesn't include all the details.
You pick out specific ideas and information from the text, link them together clearly, and explain the meaning by referring to exactly what you heard—not just isolated words.
