In this internal standard, students perform three different types (categories) of pieces from one branch (discipline) of Te Ao Haka — for example, three different styles of haka, or three different styles of mōteatea. The performance is assessed on how clearly students show the differences between the three types, how well they communicate the meaning of each piece, and at the top level, how powerfully they tell the story and bring the performance to life with presence and artistry.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Choose one discipline from Te Ao Haka — options include mōteatea, waiata ā-ringa, poi, haka or haka wahine, whakaeke, or whakawātea.
- ·Perform three different categories (types or styles) within that discipline — for example, if you choose mōteatea, you might perform an aroha, a tangi, and a pao.
- ·Show clearly through your performance that the three categories are different from each other, using precise and accurate technique.
- ·Convey the meaning and kaupapa (purpose/theme) of each piece through appropriate expression — not just the movements, but what the piece is actually about.
- ·At the highest level, bring storytelling artistry, technical skill, and personal presence (ihi, wehi, and wana) to take the audience on an emotional journey.
You perform all three categories within the same discipline and make the differences between them clear through accurate, precise execution.
