AS 91541 is a 5-credit Level 3 (Year 13) Cook Islands Māori reading standard. Students read three written or visual texts in Cook Islands Māori and answer questions about them. The 2025 exam used a message exchange between friends about NCEA results, a school fundraiser flyer with follow-up messages, and an article about marine conservation. Students need to show they understand what the texts say, pick out the right information, and explain what it means — including things that are implied but not directly stated.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Read three different Cook Islands Māori texts (these can be things like messages, articles, flyers, or images with text).
- ·Answer questions about each text by finding and using evidence from the texts themselves.
- ·Explain the meaning of what you have read, including ideas the author hints at but does not say outright.
- ·Connect pieces of information from within the texts to build a full, well-reasoned answer.
- ·Attempt every question — leaving questions blank makes it much harder to pass.
You show a basic general understanding of the texts and pull out some relevant ideas. Your answers are fairly simple and may include a bit of irrelevant information. You identify what the text says but don't explain it in depth.
