This standard asks you to design and manufacture a product using a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine—equipment that cuts, routes, or carves material based on computer instructions. You'll need to understand how CNC programming works, set up the machine correctly, operate it safely, and then check that what you've made matches your original design. The whole process—from design file to finished product—needs to be done carefully and skillfully.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Translate your design into a computer file that respects the limits and capabilities of a CNC machine, demonstrating you understand CNC programming concepts
- ·Set up and calibrate the CNC machine to match your software, including positioning axes and selecting appropriate tools and cutting speeds
- ·Operate the CNC machine safely and correctly, following all health and safety rules while the machine cuts your product
- ·Evaluate your finished product against your original design drawing to check it meets specifications
You successfully implement all the core procedures: design a product that works with CNC limitations, set up and calibrate the machine, operate it safely, and evaluate the finished piece against your design.
You show independence and accuracy throughout the entire process—your work is precise, you problem-solve without constant guidance, and you make confident decisions about setup and operation.
