You need to have real conversations in New Zealand Sign Language where you share personal information, ideas and your own opinions with someone else. These conversations should happen in everyday situations like chatting with friends, shopping, talking about events, or social exchanges. The focus is on communicating naturally and making yourself understood, not on perfect signing.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Hold back-and-forth conversations in NZSL with a genuine purpose (not rehearsed scripts) where you share personal information, stories about your life, and your own opinions
- ·Use sign language that is appropriate for the situation you're in — different ways of signing for different contexts (casual chat vs. formal explanation)
- ·Start conversations, keep them going, and participate actively using simple strategies like asking questions, pausing for response, checking understanding, and using filler signs naturally
- ·Demonstrate you understand what the other person is signing and respond meaningfully, not just mechanically
- ·Use NZSL conventions and cultural courtesies (greetings, thanking, apologising) that show respect and awareness of Deaf culture
You have conversations where you share personal information and opinions in NZSL, and while there are some inconsistencies in your signing (like unclear articulation, occasional vocabulary gaps, or pause), people can still understand the main message.
