This standard asks you to investigate the debates and disagreements about how we use natural resources from the Earth. You need to explore the main reasons different groups disagree about things like mining, oil drilling, renewable energy, and other resource use—considering Indigenous perspectives, business interests, government decisions, and environmental concerns. The core skill is explaining these disagreements and making thoughtful judgments about the impacts.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Explain the main issues and reasons why different groups disagree about using Earth's resources (Māori whānau/hapū/iwi, businesses, government, environmental groups).
- ·Identify the key science concepts and principles that relate to these resource use debates.
- ·Discuss the impacts of resource use, including environmental effects (greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, ecosystem damage), economic effects (jobs and money for communities), and health/social effects on local people.
- ·Connect different viewpoints and scientific evidence to explain why the disagreements exist and why they're complex.
- ·Make a supported judgment about the effects of resource use that recognises both benefits and harms, including uncertainty where science doesn't have clear answers.
You explain the main reasons for disagreement about resource use (different priorities among groups, competing interests) and identify relevant science concepts, with some discussion of impacts.
