This internal assessment is about analysing how Māori customs and practices (tikanga Māori) have changed over time. Students look at what tikanga used to be like, what it looks like today, why it has changed, and what it might look like in the future. They also explore the short-term and long-term effects of those changes, and how Māori communities have responded. This standard is assessed internally by your teacher (not in an exam) and is worth 4 credits at Level 3.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe and discuss what a specific tikanga Māori looked like in the past and what it looks like now, using a real context (e.g. tangihanga, pōwhiri, mau rākau, kapa haka).
- ·Explain the reasons why that tikanga has changed — for example, government laws, loss of knowledgeable kaumātua, urbanisation, or lack of resources.
- ·Give your view on what that tikanga might look like in the future, and back up your opinion with evidence or examples.
- ·For Merit and Excellence, also discuss the short-term and long-term effects of those changes on the individual and the community, and how people have responded (e.g. through wānanga, kōhanga reo, protest movements, or Māori organisations).
- ·Support all your points with relevant evidence such as interviews, historical writing, newspaper reports, data, or traditional waiata.
You discuss what a tikanga Māori looks like now and in the past (within a specific context), explain why it has changed, and give a supported opinion about its future.
