This standard asks you to show you understand how stars work and how planets form around them. You need to describe what stars are like (including where they sit on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram), the different stages of a star's life from birth to death, and how planets and moons form. You'll apply this knowledge to explain real examples and interpret diagrams.

- ·Describe the characteristics of stars (like temperature, luminosity, and colour) and explain how these link to their position on the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram
- ·Explain the stages stars go through in their life cycle — from formation in a giant molecular cloud, through the main sequence, to death as white dwarfs, neutron stars, or black holes
- ·Explain how gravity controls star formation and determines what happens to a star when it dies based on its mass
- ·Describe and explain the stages of planet and moon formation, including how planets form from protoplanetary discs and moons form through collision or capture
- ·Read and interpret scales on diagrams (especially the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram) and use evidence from these diagrams to support your explanations
