This standard asks you to show you understand how physical principles work in Earth's systems. You need to explain how heat moves around (through radiation, convection, and conduction), how light and infrared radiation are absorbed and reflected, and how these processes interact with the atmosphere, oceans, land, and living things.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe physical principles related to heat transport (radiation, convection, conduction) and radiation behaviour (transmission, reflection, absorption, scattering)
- ·Explain how these principles operate within Earth's different systems: the atmosphere, hydrosphere (oceans/water), geosphere (rocks/land), and biosphere (living things)
- ·Connect heat and radiation processes to real Earth system interactions and show how they link together
- ·Use accurate scientific terminology and apply concepts to specific Earth system contexts rather than generic descriptions
You describe the basic physical principles of heat transport and radiation behaviour, and identify which parts of the Earth system they affect.
You explain how these physical principles actually work within Earth's systems and show the connections between heat/radiation and specific Earth processes.
