In this standard, you design and carry out your own scientific investigation into a real New Zealand farming or growing product—like dairy, wine grapes, kiwifruit, or sheep meat. You start with a clear question about how the product is made or what makes it sell well, plan your method, collect real data, and draw conclusions based on what you actually found and what other sources say. It's about being a scientist in an agricultural context.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Write a clear purpose statement that explains what you're investigating and why it matters to the farming or growing industry
- ·Design a method that will actually collect data you can measure and trust, thinking through what could go wrong and how you'll avoid it
- ·Collect and record real primary data (your own measurements, observations, or trials—not just research from books or websites)
- ·Process your data, compare it to what other sources say about the same thing, and explain what your findings mean for the product or how it's produced
- ·Draw conclusions that tie back to your original question and suggest what a real grower could actually do differently based on what you found
