This standard asks you to show you understand the core ideas in mechanics — motion, forces, momentum, and energy — and apply them to real situations. You'll need to solve problems using equations, explain why things happen the way they do, and link mechanics concepts together to show deeper understanding.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Solve mechanics problems using the correct equations (for motion, momentum, energy, forces, and circular motion) with proper substitution and calculation steps
- ·Explain how mechanics concepts apply to the specific context given in each question, not just repeat definitions
- ·Show all working clearly, including formula used, values substituted, and final answer with correct units
- ·Link different mechanics ideas together — for example, connecting velocity, force, and motion in projectile problems, or recognising momentum as a vector quantity
- ·Draw and label diagrams accurately (such as vectors with correct directions and magnitudes) to support your explanations
You demonstrate basic understanding of core mechanics concepts by solving simple one-step problems (like calculating momentum or displacement) and identifying the right equations to use.
