Demonstrate understanding of mechanical systems

This standard asks you to show you understand how mechanical systems work—including objects moving in circles, spinning systems, and things that bounce back and forth (oscillating). You need to explain how forces, energy, and motion relate to these systems, and you should be able to use equations and diagrams to solve real problems involving these systems.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Draw free body diagrams that correctly show all forces and their directions for objects in circular or rotational motion
- ·Identify and explain the net forces acting on objects (like centripetal force in circular motion or torque in rotating systems)
- ·Apply conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to solve problems about moving or rotating systems
- ·Use equations and rotational kinematics to calculate values like angular velocity, angular frequency, and displacement for oscillating systems
- ·Explain the conditions for simple harmonic motion and describe how damping affects oscillating systems
You can identify the basic relationships between forces and motion (like recognising that centripetal force equals gravitational force), state the conditions for simple harmonic motion, and substitute numbers into formulas to get answers.
