This standard asks you to examine how the context—such as historical events, cultural beliefs, politics, or personal circumstances—influences what an artwork looks like and what it means. You need to show how these contexts shaped the artist's choices and the final artwork, using specific evidence from the works you're studying.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Identify the contexts that surrounded the creation of an artwork (historical, social, cultural, political, personal, etc.)
- ·Describe how those specific contexts influenced the artwork's features—such as its style, subject matter, symbols, materials, or techniques
- ·Use concrete visual evidence from the artworks to support your explanations
- ·Explain the connection between context and the ideas or meanings conveyed by the artwork
- ·For higher grades, develop deeper explanations showing how complex or multiple contexts worked together to shape the artwork

You explain in detail how specific contexts influenced particular features of the artwork, with relevant visual evidence and clear connections between context and artistic choices.
