This standard asks you to understand how products are preserved (kept fresh) and packaged to stop them going bad during storage and transport around New Zealand. You need to know what causes products to decay, how different preservation and packaging methods work, and what legal and marketing rules apply to product labels.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe what causes products to decay (like mould growth, moisture loss, colour fading, or damage during transport) and how preservation and packaging stop this
- ·Explain legal labelling requirements under New Zealand regulations (like Food Standards Australia New Zealand rules) and why they exist
- ·Describe marketing requirements for labels—like brand recognition, eco-claims, or health ticks—and why companies use them
- ·Show how a specific product could be preserved, packaged and stored to keep it in good condition through the supply chain (factory to shop shelf to home)
- ·Compare and discuss why certain combinations of preservation methods (like freeze-drying or vacuum packing) and packaging materials (like PET bottles or retort pouches) work best for different products
You describe the links between preservation and packaging methods and the types of decay they prevent, outline legal and marketing labelling requirements, and explain how a specific product could be preserved and packaged effectively.
