You need to build a complete portfolio of design work that shows you can use design thinking and techniques, while taking ideas and transforming them in new ways. Your work should be systematic—meaning it follows a clear process from brief through to finished pieces—and it should demonstrate that you can regenerate (rework and improve) your ideas across multiple outputs. This might be print design, digital design, or moving image.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Create a clear brief that defines your topic, your audience, and what you're trying to communicate—vague briefs lead to confused work
- ·Generate your own original visual assets (illustrations, photography, copywriting, graphic elements) rather than relying on stock images, found imagery, or AI-generated content
- ·Integrate artist models and research into your design decisions, showing how other designers' work informed your concept
- ·Show iterative development where ideas genuinely evolve and improve across phases—not just repeated, shallow tweaks or copy-pasting the same assets
- ·Apply design conventions (typography, colour, composition, hierarchy) purposefully to communicate meaning, and present cohesive outcomes that work in real-world contexts
You establish a clear brief, generate some original assets, analyse artist models, and iterate your ideas, but your regeneration is limited and your graphic treatments feel inconsistent across the portfolio.
