You need to pick a piece of literature or language topic you're curious about, find critical texts (like literary criticism, theory, or expert analysis) that discuss it, and use those texts to develop your own deep, well-reasoned interpretation or understanding. Your job is to synthesise ideas from different critics or theorists and show that you've thought critically about the topic, not just summarised what others have said.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Develop a clear question or hypothesis about your chosen literature or language topic that you want to investigate
- ·Select and find relevant critical texts (academic articles, literary criticism, theory books, or expert analysis) that help answer your question
- ·Evaluate which information from these critical texts is reliable and actually useful for your investigation
- ·Synthesise ideas from multiple critical texts and primary sources together to build your own interpretation—not just list what each critic said separately
- ·Present your informed understanding clearly in writing, speech, visual form, or a combination, showing your own judgement and analysis throughout
