You need to explain how the physical properties of materials (like density, hardness, melting point) are connected to what the material is made of and how it's structured at the particle level. This means you'll be looking at things like metals, polymers, ionic compounds, and explaining why a material behaves the way it does based on its atomic or molecular structure and the forces holding it together.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Identify the type of material and its structure (e.g. polymer chains, ionic lattice, metallic lattice, covalent network) by naming the specific bonding or arrangement
- ·Describe physical properties accurately and specifically (e.g. 'low density' not just 'light', 'high melting point', 'conducts electricity')
- ·Explain how the arrangement of particles and the strength of forces between them cause the observed properties
- ·Link those properties directly to why the material is suitable or unsuitable for its particular use
- ·Use precise scientific language rather than vague terms like 'strong bonds' or 'intermolecular forces' — name the actual type of bonding involved
You describe the use of a material and its physical properties with some reference to particle arrangement or bonding (e.g. 'polyethylene has weak forces between chains, so it's not dense and floats').
