This standard asks you to understand how traits vary in individuals and populations due to genetics. You'll need to describe where genetic variation comes from (like mutation or sexual reproduction), explain how we can track genes through families using pedigree charts, and evaluate what we learn when we identify genetic relationships using these tools.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe the source of genetic variation (where it comes from, like mutation, sexual reproduction, or population-level factors) using a real characteristic
- ·Describe the nature of genetic variation (what effect the change has on individuals or populations over time)
- ·Explain how and why genetic variation happens using a specific characteristic or example
- ·Use gene tracking methods like pedigree charts and Punnett squares to identify and track alleles through families
- ·Evaluate what we learn from tracking genetic variation and identify genetic relationships in populations
You accurately define key terms (gene, allele, mutation), identify genotypes in diagrams, and explain basic inheritance patterns with surface-level descriptions.
