Chemical reactions
Demonstrate understanding of chemical reactions in context

You need to show you understand how chemical reactions happen in real-world situations—not just in a chemistry lab. You'll describe the chemicals involved (reactants and products), write equations for them, and explain how they connect to everyday contexts like rusting metal, fizzy drinks, or tooth decay.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe the reactants and products for at least 5 different types of chemical reactions (neutralisation, combustion, precipitation, combination, and decomposition)
- ·Write equations for these reactions (word equations, chemical word equations, or balanced chemical equations)
- ·Use the concept of conservation of mass—show that the same amount of stuff goes in as comes out
- ·Link each reaction to a real-world context beyond the lab (natural or human-made situations like rust forming, fizzy drinks going flat, or toothpaste neutralising acid)
- ·Use observations or data (from experiments or secondary sources) to support your explanations
You describe each reaction type with reactants, products, and an equation, then say how it connects to a real-world context.
You explain why the reactants and products matter, show how conservation of mass works in your examples, and explain how the reaction links to its context using evidence.
