This standard asks you to understand and explain how and why chemical reactions happen at different speeds and how chemical systems reach a balance. You need to know about rates of reaction (what speeds them up or slows them down) and equilibrium (when a reaction stops changing), and be able to describe these using proper chemistry language and calculations.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe factors that affect how fast reactions happen (concentration, temperature, surface area, catalysts) and explain them using collision theory and activation energy
- ·Explain the dynamic nature of equilibrium and use the equilibrium constant (Kc) to describe chemical systems
- ·Predict and explain how temperature, concentration, pressure, and catalysts shift equilibrium systems
- ·Identify and describe acids and bases using proton transfer, and relate their properties (conductivity, pH, reaction speed) to whether they are strong or weak
- ·Perform calculations involving pH, Kw, and equilibrium constants for homogeneous systems
You can identify and name factors affecting reaction rates, describe equilibrium, calculate simple pH problems, and use correct chemistry terms—the basics are solid.
