You need to take a piece of information presented to the public (like a news article, advertisement, or social media post about biology) and critically analyse whether it's scientifically accurate and presented fairly. This means spotting any incorrect biological information, bias, or hidden reasons why someone might be promoting that message, and explaining what's wrong with it.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Identify biological features in the information and judge whether they are accurate, inaccurate, or biased using your biology knowledge
- ·Spot any biological errors and explain how to correct them
- ·Identify who created the information and what their purpose was (who benefits from people believing this?)
- ·Explain why or how inaccurate or biased information could affect what the public believes or does
- ·Evaluate the overall trustworthiness of the information by weighing up the accurate parts against the inaccurate or biased parts
