You perform two substantial pieces of music as part of a group (typically 3–7 musicians), demonstrating that you can work together as an ensemble. Your teacher assesses your personal contribution to the cohesion, balance, intonation, style, accuracy, and presentation across both pieces—the focus is on your musicality and overall performance, not on picking apart small mistakes.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Perform two substantial pieces of music that are meaningful and appropriately complex for your genre
- ·Contribute to the group's cohesion, balance, intonation, feel, and style so the ensemble sounds unified
- ·Play your separate or clearly identifiable part accurately and with confident, assured presentation
- ·Respond musically to what your group is doing—show that you're listening and adapting as an ensemble
- ·Perform live to an audience in a single group performance (improvisation can count as evidence)
You play your part and contribute to holding the group together in both pieces, with generally accurate intonation, balance, and style.
You contribute consistently and thoughtfully to the ensemble's sound across both pieces, responding to what the group is doing with secure control and confident presentation.
