This standard asks you to perform two separate pieces of music as the main soloist in front of an audience. The pieces need to be substantial—meaning they're complex enough and long enough to show real musical skill—and you need to demonstrate that you've been playing at a serious level for several years. Your teacher will judge how well you perform each piece, looking at your technique, musicality, and stage presence overall.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Learn and prepare two substantial pieces of music that are appropriate to your instrument and skill level
- ·Perform both pieces as a featured soloist (alone or with accompaniment) where you are clearly heard and seen
- ·Demonstrate technical security—hitting the notes reliably and playing with control
- ·Show stylistically appropriate playing—performing in the correct style for each piece of music
- ·Communicate confidently to an audience, using expression and showing you understand what the music means
