You need to show you understand how new materials are created and developed, and how these materials change the way products work and are made. This is about linking material science to real products—explaining what makes a material better and how that affects every stage from design through to throwing the product away.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Describe how a specific material was developed (through manipulation of existing materials, transformation, or creating something new) and explain how this improved a product's performance
- ·Link material properties to what the product actually does—show how the material's qualities (like fire resistance, durability, conductivity, speed) made the product work better
- ·Discuss the practical implications: how the material choice affected the product's design, how it was built, how it's used, how it's maintained, and how it gets disposed of
- ·Use real examples and avoid focusing only on the material's history—keep your focus on development and performance
- ·Write in clear paragraphs with proper explanations, not bullet points or lists without commentary
You clearly describe a material and how it was developed, explain how its properties enhance a product, and identify at least one way the material affects design, building, use, maintenance, or disposal.
