This standard asks you to show understanding of what makes up personal identity — the different factors that shape who a person is and how those identities connect to their community and culture. You'll need to identify what affects identity (like family, beliefs, social connections, education, experiences), describe how these factors influence and change identity, and explain what characteristics define an individual or group.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Identify aspects that contribute to personal identity (such as iwi, hapū, whānau, beliefs, political connections, social and economic factors, education, significant life events, health, stereotypes, language, tikanga, and technology)
- ·Explain how these aspects affect and shape a person's identity over time
- ·Describe what characteristics define an individual or group (family connections, physical features, sexuality, social status, cultural and spiritual beliefs, access to activities, and shared interests)
- ·Make clear links between how identity is formed by multiple overlapping factors, not just one thing
- ·Use examples to show understanding of how identity relates to culture and community
