This is a 5-credit external exam (sat at the end of the year) in Year 11 Health Education. The exam gives you a scenario — like a story about a real student facing a health situation — and you have to show you understand what factors are affecting that person's hauora (wellbeing). Hauora covers four dimensions: physical, mental/emotional, social, and spiritual wellbeing. You need to identify and explain the factors influencing the person, discuss how those factors connect to each other, and at the top level, draw conclusions about what those factors mean in the bigger picture — short-term, long-term, and for different people involved.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Read a scenario carefully — for example, in 2025 it was about a Year 11 student called Sara who has a food allergy and is going on school camp.
- ·Identify the factors affecting the person in the scenario. Factors can be personal (e.g. beliefs, knowledge), interpersonal (e.g. peer pressure, whānau relationships), or societal (e.g. laws, cultural norms, media).
- ·Describe how those factors affect the person's hauora — their physical, mental, social, or spiritual wellbeing — using examples from the scenario.
- ·For higher grades, explain how the factors connect to and influence each other (not just list them separately).
- ·For the top grade, draw conclusions about the wider implications — what does it mean short-term vs long-term? Who else is affected (family, school community)? Which factors matter most and why?
- ·Use evidence from the scenario resources to back up your points throughout your answers.
