This standard asks you to perform hands-on acid-base titrations (chemical experiments where you mix solutions to find unknown concentrations) and solve calculation problems using molar relationships. You'll collect real experimental data, process it carefully, and use chemistry formulas to work through multi-step problems involving amounts, concentrations, and molar masses.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Carry out an acid-base titration and collect at least three titre (volume) measurements that are close together and reasonably close to the expected result
- ·Calculate the average titre value and identify which results are concordant (reliable enough to use)
- ·Solve quantitative chemistry problems using the relationships n=m/M (moles = mass ÷ molar mass) and c=n/V (concentration = moles ÷ volume) without being given these formulas
- ·Show your working using correct procedures and apply the appropriate formula for each step
- ·Present your final answers with correct units and appropriate significant figures
You collect acceptable titration data (three results within 0.4 mL range, average within 0.8 mL of expected value) and solve one-step calculation problems using the standard relationships correctly.
