You'll carry out a practical lab investigation where you test a real consumer product to find out how much of a particular substance it contains using titration (a precise measurement technique). You'll need to plan your experiment, do preliminary tests, collect accurate data, and calculate the concentration of the substance using chemistry formulas. This is about doing real lab work properly—measuring carefully, controlling variables, and working through the whole process from planning to conclusion.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Plan a workable method that may need adjusting based on preliminary trials (testing if your method actually works before the real experiment)
- ·Collect and record sufficient data by doing multiple titrations until you get reliable, consistent results
- ·Calculate the concentration of the substance using stoichiometry (n=m/M and c=n/V formulas) with correct units and significant figures
- ·Describe and explain how you controlled variables during the experiment to make your results valid and accurate
- ·Draw a conclusion from your data about the substance in the consumer product and evaluate whether your method was successful
You successfully carry out the investigation, collect enough data to reach a conclusion, calculate the concentration, and describe which variables you controlled.
