This standard asks you to understand and work with spectroscopic data—information from mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, and 13C NMR—to figure out the structure of organic molecules. You'll use clues from different types of spectra to identify things like the molecular formula, functional groups, and how the carbon atoms are arranged in the molecule.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Identify key features in spectroscopic data (like peaks in an IR spectrum, signals in a 13C NMR, and the molecular ion peak in a mass spectrum)
- ·Determine the molecular formula and molar mass from mass spectrometry data
- ·Identify functional groups present in the organic molecule using infrared spectroscopy
- ·Work out the carbon framework and distinguish between structural isomers using combined spectroscopic evidence
- ·Justify your proposed structure by explaining how all three types of spectroscopic data fit together and support your answer
You can identify separate pieces of information from the spectra (like counting carbons from NMR or recognizing an O-H stretch in IR) and use them to describe parts of the molecular structure.
