In this standard, students show they understand a particular style or genre of dance — for example hip hop, ballet, Bollywood, or contemporary dance. They need to explain what makes that genre unique, where it came from, and why it looks and feels the way it does. This is a written exam worth 4 credits. Students answer three questions about their chosen genre, covering key movements, clothing, and the settings where the dance is performed. The key skill is not just describing what the dance looks like, but explaining the connection between the dance's features and its history, culture, or purpose.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Choose a dance genre or style you have studied (e.g. hip hop, flamenco, ballet, kapa haka).
- ·Answer three written exam questions about that genre: one on key movements, one on clothing, and one on the settings where the dance takes place.
- ·For each question, describe the features of the genre AND explain how they connect to where the genre came from or why it developed the way it did.
- ·Back up your points with specific evidence — real examples from the genre, not just general statements.
- ·Explain the 'how' and 'why', not just the 'what'.
You can clearly describe the key features of your genre (movements, clothing, settings) and show some understanding of its context or background. Your descriptions make sense and you include some evidence, even if the links between the features and the context are not always fully explained.
