This standard asks you to solve real-world and mathematical problems using calculus—mainly differentiation (finding rates of change and gradients) and integration (working backwards from derivatives). You'll need to show you understand how these methods work, use them correctly, and explain your reasoning clearly.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Differentiate polynomial functions to find gradient functions and gradients at specific points
- ·Find anti-derivatives (integrals) of polynomials and include the constant of integration (c)
- ·Write equations of tangent lines and find turning points using f'(x) = 0
- ·Apply calculus to real-life problems like kinematics (motion), rates of change, and other contexts
- ·Sketch graphs of both original functions and their derivatives, showing correct intercepts and shape
You can differentiate polynomials accurately, find anti-derivatives with the constant of integration, evaluate derivatives at given points, and apply kinematics relationships correctly.
You connect multiple calculus concepts together—for example, using the second derivative test or checking gradients to verify the nature of turning points, or solving multi-step kinematics problems where you form equations and use them to answer questions.
