You need to create a cohesive body of painting work across two large panels that shows you understand how painters actually work—things like colour, composition, technique, and how to develop ideas through multiple pieces. Your portfolio should show a clear visual idea that connects your works together, with evidence that you've thought carefully about your choices and refined your work as you've gone along.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Produce enough resolved paintings across two A1 panels to demonstrate sustained, deliberate practice—not rushed or incomplete work
- ·Show understanding of painting conventions including colour, composition, mark-making, and surface technique relevant to your chosen subject matter
- ·Develop and refine a clear thematic idea or visual proposition that connects your separate works together
- ·Demonstrate decision-making by selecting which works to include and showing evidence of how your ideas changed and improved across the body of work
- ·Use authentic starting points and original imagery—your own drawings, observations, or research—rather than copying found images or using AI-generated content
You present a selection of finished paintings connected to a clear theme, with evidence that you've made deliberate choices about colour, composition, and technique, and that your ideas developed across the work.
