You need to show you understand how the same media text can have different meanings depending on the angle you look at it from. Pick a media text (film, TV show, advertisement, music video, etc.) and explain what it means by examining it through different lenses—like how it was made, who made it, what it represents, or what cultural and social values it reflects. You're basically proving you can dig into media and understand that meaning isn't fixed; it changes based on perspective.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Choose a media text and identify multiple different readings or interpretations of it (using different perspectives like genre, technical, representational, cultural, gendered, political, or semiotic approaches)
- ·Explain what each reading reveals about the text's meaning and how different perspectives uncover, add to, or shift the meaning
- ·Show connections between the different readings and relevant media theory or concepts
- ·For Merit, analyse how each reading actually affects or changes the overall meaning of the text
- ·For Excellence, evaluate why these different readings matter—what their significance is for understanding society, culture, politics, ideology, or aesthetics
You explain the meaning of a media text by looking at it through at least two different readings or perspectives, showing you understand that meaning can be interpreted in multiple ways.
