This is a 6-credit internal standard (assessed by your teacher, not an exam) where you design and build something real using materials — like a piece of furniture, a mechanical device, or a constructed object. You work from a brief (a description of what needs to be made and why), gather feedback from real people along the way, and use that feedback to improve your outcome. At the end, you judge how well your finished product does the job it was supposed to do.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Write or use a brief that explains what you are making, who it is for, where it will be used, and what it needs to do — including specific, measurable requirements called specifications
- ·Design and build a physical outcome (e.g. a wooden shelf, a mechanical device, a constructed object) that is fit for purpose
- ·Consult at least two stakeholders (e.g. the end user, an expert) and collect documented feedback — written or recorded — during the making process
- ·Use that feedback to make decisions about how to improve your outcome, and explain why you made those changes
- ·At the end, judge your finished outcome against your original specifications and say whether each one was met or not met, and why
You build an outcome that is fit for purpose and meets the requirements of your brief and specifications. You have consulted stakeholders and collected their feedback.
