You need to show you understand how to use sustainable practices (like choosing eco-friendly materials, reducing waste, and respecting the environment) when you're designing and developing something made from materials and processing technology. This means showing your design work, researching sustainability options, thinking about how your choices affect the environment (kaitiakitanga), and explaining why you made the decisions you did.
What to do, grades and common mistakes
- ·Design something purposeful for a real person, whānau, or community and show your design development work with sketches, photos, or screenshots
- ·Research sustainable practices that are relevant to your specific project and explain how they influenced your material and component choices
- ·Consider and demonstrate kaitiakitanga (environmental guardianship) in your decisions about materials, how you use them without waste, and how you dispose of offcuts responsibly
- ·Consult with at least two stakeholders and explain how their feedback shaped your design and sustainable choices
- ·Connect your sustainable practices to your actual project context rather than describing them in isolation
You describe your design, identify the end user, show you researched sustainable practices, list your material choices (often scrap or upcycled), mention how you used equipment, and show feedback from at least two stakeholders.
